A trip to a Christmas market is a great excuse to get together with friends and get into the festive spirit.
From the smell of the mulled wine to perusing the gifts on offer, they make for a great day out.
So it is no surprise than in November and December, all kinds of festive markets pop up all around the place.
They are also something people are willing to travel for.
So here are a list of some of the biggest Christmas markets taking place within an hour of Teesside so you can get planning.
York Christmas Markets
Thursday, November 15 – Sunday, December 23
York is a lovely place to head at any time of the year.
So it is not surprising that the Christmas market here is a popular one.
There will be over 100 traditional style chalets with twinkling fairy lights can be found along Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square, The Judge’s Lodging and Coppergate.
Newcastle International Christmas Market

The market will take over parts of Grey’s Monument, Grey Street and Grainger Street in the city centre, and will bringing a real taste of Europe to Tyneside.
You can get a currywurst from Germany, waffles from Holland, paella from Spain and crepes – both sweet and savoury – from France.

Friday, November 9 – Saturday, December 22
Set in Millennium Square, this is one of the most established German Christmas Markets in the UK, with traditional wooden stalls, festive greenery, and a Christmas carousel ride.
The market consists of over 40 wooden chalet stalls from authentic German traders providing a wide range of seasonal gift ideas for everyone including; handcrafted toys, jewellery, Christmas cards and festive decorations, speciality foods and traditional German delicacies such as gluhwein, bratwurst sausages, goulash, soups, schnitzels, stollen, gingerbread and candied fruits.
Returning this year for an extended run due to overwhelming demand last year is the special Santa’s Breakfast experience for children and families. Set in the beautifully themed in Alp Chalet restaurant every Saturday and Sunday throughout December and during school half term between 10.30am to 11.45am, Father Christmas will play host to a delicious authentic German breakfast buffet.
Harrogate Christmas Market
Thursday, November 15 – Sunday, November 18
This event may only last for four days but is always a popular choice with Christmas market fans.
Held on The Stray in the historic Montpellier Quarter of the town centre, this year’s market is expected to have nearly 200 stalls selling everything from Yorkshire cheeses and chutneys to handmade gifts and Christmas decorations.
And of course let’s not forget Santa’s Grotto and real reindeer!
